| A. TEAM SPORTSMANSHIP RATING SYSTEM | ||
| THE WAY IT WORKS: | ||
|
Officials and one on-site staff person rate teams after
each game. These figures are averaged to determine a team's
overall score for the night and are included in a special
box on score sheets. This system is designed to help players become more aware of the attitudes and actions they foster in competition towards opponents, officials, and teammates. It is hoped that this feedback from the Officials and the RecSports Staff will promote behavior that makes playing truly fun and healthy for everyone involved.
|
Categories The closer a team's average is to "A", the closer the team is playing with a true understanding of what the spirit of competition is all about. A "B+" average is stellar.
|
Penalties If at the end of the season a team's average is below B, that team will forfeit its spot in the playoffs. If at any time after the first two games of a season a team's average is below C, that team will immediately forfeit their slot. After two Failing scores, a team automatically forfeits its slot.
|
Sportsmanship Rating System: The sportsmanship rating system is intended to be an objective scale by which teams' attitudes and behaviors can be assessed. Behavior before, during, and after a RecSports contest is included in each rating. Each team captain is responsible for educating ALL players and spectators affiliated with his/her team about the policies/procedures. Teams must maintain a C average to continue during league play. Teams must have a B average in order to qualify for tournament play. The games management coordinator and manager, officials, and board members will determine the score for the teams after each RecSports contest. The RecSports staff reserves the right to review and/or change any sportsmanship rating given. Captains inquiring about their team's sportsmanship rating should do so the business day following the contest by contacting the RecSports Office in Hart 227, call 496-2115, or email recsportssec@byui.edu.
The sportsmanship rating system is based on the following criteria: · A - Excellent Conduct and Sportsmanship · Team members cooperate with and demonstrate good sportsmanship toward members of opposing teams, spectators, and ALL campus recreation staff. · Team captain exhibits control over his/her team and spectators, converses reasonably and rationally with officials about rule interpretations, and cooperates by providing any information requested by any RecSports staff member. · B - Good Conduct and Sportsmanship · Team members verbally complain about some of the decisions made by the officials and/or show minor dissensions, which may or may not merit an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. · Teams receive one unsportsmanlike conduct penalty will receive no higher than a "B" rating. · C - Average Conduct and Sportsmanship · Team shows verbal dissent toward officials and/or the opposing team, which may or may not result in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. · Captain exhibits minor control over team/spectators, but is in control of him/herself. · Teams receiving more than two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties will receive no higher than a "C" rating. · D - Below Average Conduct and Sportsmanship · Team constantly complains to the officials and/or opposing team from the field/court/sidelines. · Team captain exhibits little or no control over team/spectators or him/herself. · On the field, team members who fail to appear at their scheduled contest or are unable to produce enough players to field a team according to the rules of the involved sport will receive a D rating. · Teams that have a player ejected will receive no higher than a "D" rating. · F - Poor Conduct and Sportsmanship · Team is completely uncooperative; captain has no control over team/spectators/self. · Teams play with ineligible participants or withhold any information requested. · Deliberate damage or destruction of any campus recreation facility/equipment. · Multiple player ejections or causing a contest to be forfeited by any reason than not having enough players will receive an "F" rating. · Any threatening behavior (verbal/nonverbal) towards any player, spectator, or RecSports employee. · Teams receiving an "F" rating during league play or tournament will not be allowed to continue play. · Teams receiving a "D" rating during tournament must have their captain meet with the RecSports Student Director BEFORE their next scheduled contest.

| STATEMENT | ||
|
Abusive language toward officials, other participants,
and manipulation of the rules are not part of the game.
What is part of the game is pure satisfaction of playing,
getting fit, and enhancing friendships. The spirit of play, then, is based on cooperative competition and fair play and all players are asked to participate within the context of this spirit.
Consequence for F Rating
| ||
| B. APPEAL OF A TEAM SPORTSMANSHIP RATING | ||
| A season ending rating can be appealed by the captain. A written appeal must be filed within 48 hours of the rating. During the appeal process, the burden of proof shifts from the RecSports Program to the captain. IT IS NOT A HEARING. The process is a review of the record of the incident(s) and reasons for the season ending behavior. Teams will remain dropped from any further competition during the appeal process. Acceptable reasons for an appeal are: new information concerning the contest becomes available and/or the sanction is too severe for the offense. | ||
| C. TEAM CONDUCT RESULTING IN A FORFEIT | ||
| In addition to the sportsmanship rating system, the following team behavior will result in a game being immediately stopped and FORFEITED (regardless of score or time remaining): | ||
|
||
|
Any inappropriate behavior following the forfeiting of a
game could lead to a season ending rating. Serious on site
situations will also result in initiating the involvement of
campus police and the referral to the Dean of Students.
Any player(s) who enters the court of play during a dispute or to dispute with an official or another player results in that player being ejected and suspended for at least one more game. That player must also meet with a RecSports administrator prior to any further participation.
Any spectator(s) who enters the court of play shall meet with a RecSports administrator prior to participation or attending any RecSports contests again. The spectator shall be suspended from participating for a minimum of two (2) games. They shall also be banned from attending any RecSports contests for at least two weeks.
| D. TEAM SPORTSMANSHIP RATINGS | ||
| Any competition requires competitors. Without an opponent there is no game--and no fun! Good sportsmanship and participation are the focuses of the RecSports Program. RecSports rewards not only the champions of a league, but also those teams who consistently display outstanding sportsmanship. | ||
| E. INDIVIDUAL PLAYER CONDUCT | ||
Individual Player Code of Ethics
| ||
| The development of individual sportsmanship is of fundamental importance in all RecSports activities. A yellow/red card will be displayed during contests to warn and/or eject individuals/teams/spectators/organizations. However, a yellow card is not required before a red card is displayed; and, a red card is not required for a suspension to occur. Players who have been ejected are required to leave the vicinity within three (3) minutes. Failure of ejected participant(s) and/or spectator(s) to leave the vicinity within the allotted three (3) minutes or returning to the vicinity during or after the game will result in the game being forfeited, and additional individual/team sanctions. | ||
| AN EJECTION FROM ANY RECSPORTS CONTEST FOR INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR CARRIES A MINIMUM OF ONE GAME SUSPENSION, TO BE SERVED IN THAT TEAM'S NEXT GAME IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE EJECTION. | ||
The following behavior results in ejection from a
RecSports contest & may result in referral to campus police
and the Deans office:
| ||
| Any of the above behavior results in a minimum one game suspension. | ||
| Actions before, during, and after the game in question will be taken into account when determining sanctions. Sanctioning may range from a minimum of a one game suspension to expulsion from the program for an indefinite period of time. Incidents may be referred to a conduct administrator in the Deans Office. Ejected individual(s) who are suspended for longer than two games will remain suspended from all RecSports activity until they meet with the Director and/or League Supervisor after meeting with a Conduct Officer in Deans Office and serving their sanction. | ||
| Individual(s) playing while under suspension will receive a minimum sanction of one semester and will be referred to the Dean of Students. | ||
| Team Captains will be notified of the suspended status of their players during their meeting to discuss the team's unacceptable rating. (See Consequences for Unacceptable Rating). | ||
| The Student Director, Assistant Student Director and or League Supervisor reserve the right to suspend any participant or team from RecSports competition for conduct, behavior, or attitude that they perceive as interfering with the orderly conduct of activities and/or safety of the individuals participating in the RecSports Program. | ||
CONSEQUENCES
| ||
| Players' Dress | ||
| Outside: Normal BYU-Idaho accepted and approved personal play attire or BYU-Idaho Physical Education issue uniform is required. In cold or in climate weather, stocking caps or headwear may be worn, but no bandanas. Baseball or "brimmed" caps will only be allowed in softball. Wearing any clothing with pockets is not allowed during participation in flag football. | ||
| Inside: BYU-Idaho P.E. issued (shirt and shorts) or personal athletic wear. No caps or bandanas may be worn inside the building and uniforms, (shirts and shorts) must be worn in the proper manner. | ||
| Teams may use their own matching jerseys-all participants must have the same jersey-no markings other than a number or team logo may be worn. | ||
| If a player is clearly in violation of the BYU-Idaho Dress standards, they will not be allowed to play. As soon as the problem is taken care of, they are then eligible to play. If a person is borderline, by the officials' judgment, they will get a warning that will need to be taken care of by the next game. The students name and team will be noted on the roster. | ||
| F. APPEAL FOR INDIVIDUAL SANCTIONS | ||
| The individual can appeal sanctions of two games. A written appeal must be filed within 48 hours of the sanction. This forum is not a hearing. The process is a review of the record of the incident(s) and reasons for the excessive behavior. Individuals will remain suspended during the appeal process. The decision by the RecSports Program to refer individual(s)/team(s) to the Dean of Students may not be appealed. Acceptable reasons for an appeal are; new information concerning the contest becomes available, and/or the sanction is too severe for the offense. The Director, will review the appeal. | ||
| G. SELF- OFFICIATED LEAGUES | ||
| Individual and team sportsmanship is of paramount importance in all self-officiated activities. The responsibility to ensure fairness in all contests is shared by the teams involved. If RecSports Staff are needed to intercede and remove/eject player(s)/spectator(s) for any inappropriate conduct the situation will be handled very seriously. Minimum sanctions will likely remove the player involved for the remainder of the sport season. Although no formal rating takes place, teams will be held to a very high code of conduct. Absolutely no inappropriate conduct of any kind will be tolerated. | ||
