Rule changes and emphasis on conduct:

FACIAL HAIR
If player shows up to the game with facial hair, they will have to go home and shave before they can play in the current game.  They will also receive a warning and will have to referee a Rec Sports game before they can play in the next game.

BREAK AWAY LAY-UP

Rule:

The player on defense is not allowed to make a play from behind on the ball when the offensive player is shooting a fastbreak lay-up (going up for a shot). If the defensive player is in front of or ahead of the ball when the offensive player is shooting the lay-up then he/she may make a play on the ball.

Penalty:  Offensive team receives 2 points and the ball at half court.  Defensive player must sit for 10 minutes.

WARNINGS, TECHNICALS, UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT:

Warning: Official gives warning for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Official makes sure it is recorded on the game book with players number who received it.

Penalty:  Can continue play but must officiate a game with recreational sports before being eligible to play again.

1st Technical:  Official gives technical for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The technical should be recorded in the game book with player number.

Penalty: Must sit out a total of 40 minutes from the time of the technical foul.

Must also referee game in Rec Sports before can play next game.

2nd Technical:  Official gives technical for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The technical should be recorded in the game book with player number.

Penalty: Suspended for the rest of the semester.

SidenoteCOACHES are the leaders in charge of enforcing this with their players.  If a coach can see a player getting upset and the athlete cannot substitute themselves out for getting out of control (which would show the highest level of self control) then the coach should step in and pull the player out of the game.  This may prevent any technicals or warnings from ever occurring.

BYBL
The BYBL, as well as the other sports in the Athletics department, is different than any other program. Through the Athletics Program students have an opportunity for spiritual growth and leadership. The BYBL is dedicated to helping enhance the lives of those involved. Sis. Lori Woodland, Director of Physical Activities, has been quoted saying that if we aren't developing our athletes spiritually, then we are failing to fulfill the purpose of this program. Trent Shippen, Athletic Director/Basketball Manager, is at the helm of the basketball program. With over 10 years of experience as a collegiate athlete and coach with a Master's Degree in Sports Science he is a great asset to the program. Bro. Shippen and his student coordinator will do everything to ensure that all participants enjoy their experience and learn vital principles for future roles as spouses, parents, employees, and church leaders.

Along with its quest for personal improvement, the BYBL also offers students a chance to participate in collegiate basketball at a highly competitive level. Each semester students enjoy the many benefits the league has to offer.

Some of the physical benefits of participation in the BYBL are as follows:

Tryouts
Coaches
Scheduled practices
Officials
Uniforms
Team Comradory
Dedicated & committed teammates
Skill development through coaching clinics
Weekly coaches meetings
Banquet
Awards
Volunteer opportunities

The list goes on. All in all, the program is designed to give students opportunities for growth through athletics. This program is truly inspired of the Lord and has touched the lives of many involved.

PARTICIPATION FEE OF $10 WILL BE CHARGED PER PARTICIPANT

Coaching Opportunities
The BYBL is dependant upon good coaches. There are many opportunities for growth while coaching. Not only do coaches attend all of the events the athletes attend, but also enjoy weekly meetings with the other coaches, Student Coordinator, and Trent Shippen. Along with the weekly coaches meeting there are weekly coaches clinics where the coaches are instructed on basketball skills by previous coaches such as Coach Lori Woodland, Coach Ken Jackson, Coach Trent Shippen, Coach Clyde Nelson, and others.

Coaches have a special opportunity to mentor their peers. The league has had many great coaches and looks forward to the future. Coaches in many instances are seen as role models and are required to act as such both temporally and spiritually.

In order to be involved in coaching contact Bro. Shippen as soon as you know you are available to do so as coaching positions are generally taken well before the season ever starts. There are plenty of openings however, as assistant coaches are accepted as well.
