Cross Country Volunteer Application
Assistant Manager (2):
The Assistant Manager helps the Manager fulfill his/her duties as assigned. She/he is to:
- Counsel with the Manager as needed (usually daily for 1-10 minutes).
- Counsel with assigned Head Coaches as needed (usually 2+ times/week).
Note: Assistant Manager may also serve concurrently as a Coach.
Plan 1-3 hours/week into your schedule to fulfill your Cross Country responsibilities and be committed to do so.
Secretary (1):
The Secretary is to record and distribute minutes of weekly Cross Country Council meetings. She/he is to:
- Record attendance, document discussion and action items.
- After reviewing them with the Manager, distribute the minutes with assignments to those invited to attend.
Note: Secretary may also serve concurrently as a Coach.
Plan 1 hour/week into your schedule to fulfill your Cross Country responsibilities and be committed to do so.
Head Coach (1 per team):
The Head Coach is to select, train, teach, and hold accountable Assistant Coaches and team members. She/he is to:
- Select, train, and counsel with Assistant Coaches as needed (usually daily for 2-5 minutes).
- Select team members (12-20 students) via draft:
- Communicate to them the purpose and objectives of the program and team. Counsel with entire team a few minutes at each practice and at team meetings, and visit with each team member individually 1+ times/week.
- Counsel with each team member to assist them with individual goals within the team framework.
- Hold team members accountable for their commitment.
- Reflect with them on what they experience and learn.
- Plan, organize, and direct team practices and meetings.
- Attend and participate in 45-minute Cross Country Council meetings each week during the season.
- Preside at team practices and other team gatherings.

Assistant Coach (usually 1 per team):
The Assistant Coach is to help the Head Coach fulfill his/her duties as assigned. She/he is to:
- Counsel with Head Coach as needed (usually daily for 2-5 minutes).
- Visit with teammates as needed (usually 2+ times/week).
- Counsel with assigned team members to assist them with individual goals within the team framework. Hold team members accountable for their commitment.
Plan 3-8 hours/week into your schedule to fulfill your Cross Country responsibilities and be committed to do so.
Group Leader (usually 1-3 per team):
The Group Leader is to lead a small group of similarly skilled teammates through the workouts assigned by the Head or Assistant Coach. She/he is to:
- Counsel with Head/Assistant Coach as needed (usually daily for 1-5 minutes).
- Counsel with Group Athletes as needed (usually daily for 1-5 minutes).
Note: Coaches may also serve concurrently as Group Leaders.
Plan 3-6 hours/week into your schedule to fulfill your cross-country responsibilities and be committed to do so.
Meet Manager (1):
Note: This is a wage position. It is recommended this person not concurrently participate or coach in Cross Country.
The Meet Manager is responsible for all details related to the meets. Given the season schedule, plan, organize, and coordinate all meets. Specifically she/he is to:
- Find, train, manage, and evaluate volunteers to run the meets, specifically to:
- Measure and mark the course: using measuring wheel, paint, painter, stakes, hammer, pennants, flags, cones, arrows, start/finish banner.
- Serve as finish line officials: starter, starting unit, digital clock, timers, stopwatches, finish place recorders, clipboards, pens, tic sheets, results sheets, people mover, finish judge, batons (for relay).
- Serve as race officials: direction pointers, mile split readers, stopwatches, announcer, script.
Plan 5-10 hours/week into your schedule to fulfill your Cross Country responsibilities and be committed to do so.
Non-Management Positions
Athlete (12-15 per team):
- Diligently train and compete as part of a team.
- Commit to follow program guidelines and standards.
- Compete in team uniform at meets.
- Counsel together with entire team 15-30 minutes/week regarding the purpose and objectives of the program and team.
- Receive direction from the Head Coach and Assistant Coaches. Visit with them as needed.
- Befriend others.
Plan 5-10 hours/week into your schedule to fulfill your Cross Country responsibilities and be committed to do so.
Meet Volunteer (usually 11-15):
- Help to run the meet efficiently and professionally by performing duties assigned by the Meet Manager.
- If available, wear assigned outer clothing designating oneself as a meet official.
Plan 2-3 hours/week into your schedule to fulfill your Track & Field responsibilities and be committed to do so.
Web Updater (1):
- Update the Cross Country Web site with current results, team rosters, and program information.
- Send results to Competitive Sports Information Coordinator to send to Scroll.
- Receive training and direction from Sports Web Master and Cross Country Manager.
Plan 2-3 hours/week into your schedule to fulfill your Cross Country responsibilities and be committed to do so.
Photographer/Video Person (1):
- Take team pictures and meet pictures/video. Download pictures to Website.
- Post team and highlight pictures in Hart display window.
- Prepare highlight video presentation for closing dinner.
Plan 2-3 hours/week into your schedule to fulfill your Cross Country responsibilities and be committed to do so.
Prerequisites for all of the above positions
- Be desirous to use your agency to act as you participate whole-heartedly in the program.
- Be enthusiastic about rendering service to bless yourself and others.
- Live and sustain the BYU-Idaho Honor Code.
- Be a matriculated BYU-Idaho student.
