Leadership Opportunities

With no previous experience or special skills necessary, students may volunteer to assist with programs and events, or manage and run the events. Especially applicable for students in the Therapeutic Recreation Major, but appropriate training and educational experiences that will enhance one’s ability to work with people of varying backgrounds and skill levels.

Students with disabilities are particularly welcome to serve in leadership positions as an opportunity to share insights and training important to the strength and vitality of the program.



How to get involved

There are two divisions in the Activities program that cover the Six Areas. Physical Activities includes Sports, Fitness and Outdoor. Enrichment Activities includes Social, Service and Talent. Two of the manager positions will be found within the Physical Activities Areas and one within the Enrichment category, a Coordinator will maintain oversight of the program as follows:



Sports and Fitness Adaptive Manager

Responsible for assisting students with disabilities access and participate within Sports and Fitness. Specific duties as follows:

  • Organize and facilitate existing programming for sporting and fitness events, such as;
    • Wheelchair Basketball
    • Adaptive Bowling
  • Receive participation forms and determine resources needed to make adaptations for students wishing to participate in regularly scheduled Rec. Sports teams, competitions, and Fitness events and workshops.
  • Counsel with other leaders within your areas to be conscious of planning programs and events that are accessible to all students. Requiring regular contact with Sports and Fitness leaders.
  • Promote and advertise events, specifically targeting the students with disabilities, who have not traditionally participated in Sports or Fitness events in the past. Use appropriate symbols and words to convey accessibility. (i.e. welcomed participation of all skill levels and abilities, etc)
  • Meet bi-weekly with the Adaptive Coordinator for training and committee work.
  • Assist with committee assignments to provide education and resource information to students with disabilities and to student body and campus generally.
  • Keep up to date with advancements in ADA requirements, rules and regulations, and adaptive services available for students with disabilities.
  • Understand safety policies and procedures, and promote a healthy environment for student participation.
  • Keep equipment in good repair, replacement, and consider purchase needs for expanded or improved participation.

Outdoor Adaptive Manager

Responsible for assisting students with disabilities access and participate in the offerings within Sports and Fitness. Specific duties as follows:

  • Organize and facilitate existing programming for sporting and fitness events, such as;
    • Cycling
    • Skiing
    • Canoeing
  • Receive participation forms and determine resources needed to make adaptations for students wishing to participate in regularly scheduled Outdoor programs and events.
  • Counsel with other leaders within your area to be conscious of planning programs and events that are accessible to all students.
  • Promote and advertise events, specifically targeting the students with disabilities, who have not traditionally participated in Outdoor Activities. Use appropriate symbols and words to convey accessibility. (i.e. welcomed participation of all skill levels and abilities, etc)
  • Meet bi-weekly with the Adaptive Coordinator for training and committee work.
  • Assist with committee assignments to provide education and resource information to students with disabilities and to student body and campus generally.
  • Keep up to date with advancements in ADA requirements, rules and regulations, and adaptive services available for students with disabilities.

Enrichment Adaptive Manager

  • Receive participation forms and determine resources needed to make adaptations for students wishing to participate in regularly scheduled Talent, Social or Service programs and events.
  • Counsel with other leaders within your areas to be conscious of planning programs and events that are accessible to all students.
  • Meet regularly with leaders in Talent, Social and Service to assess student participation needs, such as; ramp access to Talent performances, transportation to Service events, etc.
  • Work with Publicity Managers in each area to ensure appropriate usage of symbols and words to invited student participation of all skill levels and abilities, include link for participation form.
  • Meet bi-weekly with the Adaptive Coordinator for training and committee work.
  • Assist with committee assignments to provide education and resource information to students with disabilities and to student body and campus generally.
  • Keep up to date with advancements in ADA requirements, rules and regulations, and adaptive services available for students with disabilities, and promote a healthy environment for student participation.
  • Understand safety policies and procedures, and promote a healthy environment for student participation.

Adaptive Services Coordinator

  • Oversee the Adaptive Services program throughout the six Activities areas, to create cohesiveness among Managers, and to ensure expanded integration efforts.
  • Meet bi-weekly with Managers to provide training on how to receive students, identify needs and adapt activities. Consider safety, cost, feasibility, and resources available.
  • Provide direction to Managers for committee assignments to educate students on campus, invite participation and leadership, and outreach to students with disabilities.
  • Keep up to date with advancements in ADA requirements, rules and regulations, and adaptive services available for students with disabilities.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of events offered, equipment utilized, and resources available at BYU-Idaho to meet the needs of students.
  • Develop and improve integration efforts within all six areas of Activities through expanded offerings, better communication and advertising, increased involvement of students with disabilities, and creating opportunities for leadership.
  • Primarily responsible for equipment requests and budget with Advisor approval.
  • Work closely with Adaptive and Social Advisors for program growth and development.
