Understanding Pace Projections and Start Times

Back to Temple to Temple Relay
Accurate projections are critical to a successful relay. At any given spot along the race route we have the course set-up and volunteers in place for about a1-to-3 hour window. We will start teams in a way that will keep them within this window, according to the teams' projected times. Slower teams will be assigned starting times closer to 8:00 a.m.; faster teams will be assigned starting times closer to 9:30 a.m. If a team runs just one minute per mile faster than they projected they will be more than 30 minutes ahead of their projection by the end of the race. For some teams this could mean that they will be ahead of the set-up crew.

Accurately Projecting Paces & Times

To assist in creating accurate projections we have built a Pace Calculator. The information you submit through Edit Team Information is used calculate your team's projected pace and to assign a start time. By using Pace Calculator you will be know the times your runners are projected to arrive at each of the exchange zones. If any of those times are outside any window of time bounded by the times listed in the "Safety crew arrival" and "Exchange takedown" columns in the Exchange Zone Time Schedule (see below), contact us by Sep. 15, 2009 so we can change your start time.

Getting Ahead of the Set-Up Crew

We understand that it is impossible to perfectly project your team's pace. However, if your team gets too far ahead of projections we may be forced to hold your team at one of the exchange zones for 30 minutes. If your runner arrives at an exchange zone before the time listed in the "Safety crew arrival" column in the Exchange Zone Time Schedule (see below), they may be forced to stop.

Getting Behind the Clean-Up Crew

If a team gets behind projections and falls behind the clean-up crew, we may have to pull a team off the course due to safety concerns. The Exchange Zone Time Schedule (see below) indicates the anticipated time you must pass a checkpoint in order to be allowed to continue running the race. If your runner arrives at an exchange zone after the time listed in the "Exchange takedown" column in the Exchange Zone Time Schedule, your team may be told to discontinue the relay.
